Mombasa -Kenya

One would think 3 months in Australia would make one weary of the beach. However, a little too much inland time and Mike and I were craving some sand and sun to accompany the hot weather. We unfortunately did not make it to Lamu, a world heritage site on the north-east coast. The roads sounded dangerous, however we met many the independent traveler who found it safe and worthwhile.
We stayed in a humble villa 15km south of Mombasa, Tiwi Beach. Friendly, warm and beautiful, but a better time to hit the beaches here are in fall and winter when the seaweed growth is minimal and the water is clearer.
I wouldn't encourage anyone to consider the "Colonial Dinner Train" that runs through Kenya. New ownership from South Africa has let this once 1st class gourmet experience turn into a harrowing journey with break-downs and shabby restrooms. It took 2 full days on a train to cross Kenya, leaving me a little queazy as we approached Uganda.
