Masaii Mara - The Tribe
I have mixed feelings about taking the "village culture tour" during our safari, which is an additional cost and relatively expensive. The Masaii are one of the most popular tribes through East Africa, often making the other tribes feel resentment for the amount of attention and money they make from these cultural tours. They do live a tribal lifestyle, travelling nomadically throughout the country side, existing with ancient traditions and dress. They have an obvious agreement with the government to continue their lifestyle, allow visitors for a tour, yet sadly are not allowed into the game parks, although not uncommon to see them within the park).
I respect their need to generate income, however it was very clear they were far from enthused about having visitors come into their homes and show some dance routines. It was all very systematic and awkward. I did manage to get some smiling faces when I showed the ladies photos of themselves, they did like that. Their homes are made of cow dung, which usually holds for about 9 years, and the herd comes in at night, into the village. We had the fortune to try some of their special brew....SAUSAGE BEER!
